Every month, Sarah’s Inn nominates a volunteer to be our Volunteer of The Month. Eneyda Berrum was nominated as June’s Volunteer of The Month. Eneyda joined the Sarah’s Inn team in March 2025. Our Volunteer and In-Kind Coordinator, Ebony, asked Eneyda about her experiences as a volunteer.
- How long have you been volunteering with us, and how did you hear about Sarah’s Inn?
“I have been volunteering at Sarah's Inn since March of 2025, I first heard of Sarah's inn when talking to my professor when searching for internship opportunities, a couple months later they were at the career fair at Dominican University and its when i learned about the volunteering program that they offered.”
- What have you enjoyed about volunteering with Sarah’s Inn?
“I have enjoyed everything about volunteering with Sarah's Inn but I have especially enjoyed how much it has helped me with my listening skills and the more confident I've become when talking about a difficult experience which is essential for the hotline. Volunteering here has been a great guidance and needed experience for what I am studying and the career I want to accomplish.”
- Every month, you take on multiple crisis line shifts. How do you find ways to fit volunteering into your schedule?
“I plan my volunteering shifts based on my availability with my other schedules, for instance if there is a day the office needs support in person I can go in. Or if I know that a certain hour I'll be free to take calls I sign up as soon as I can. However, overnight shifts at the crisis line are the times where it fits more into my schedule, this way I can get other things done in the day and have all my materials ready for when I need to take over the line.”
- What made you want to volunteer at a domestic violence agency?
“Not only have I experienced domestic violence but there are so many loved ones who have also gone through domestic violence without having resources nor any type of help. They didn’t have the support to help them get away from it, to act, nor to be able to talk without feeling ashamed. Which is why I wanted to volunteer at a domestic violence agency to be able to be someone whom victims don’t feel ashamed nor uncomfortable to speak with.”
- Some people may find it difficult to balance working, volunteering, and their personal lives. Why do you think it is important for folks to find the time to volunteer?
“I truly believe that volunteering is something that everyone should be doing, it’s like medicine to the heart, by knowing that you are supporting people who might not have any other type of support it makes your heart and soul at peace.
We need to be making a positive change in other’s lives, by volunteering one might become the only little light into someone’s life where all they might see its darkness, that light it's the hope and encouragement to keep pushing and that it will be okay. We don’t know when we will need that little light in our lives so we should all be a little light in others.”
- Why should people volunteer at Sarah’s Inn?
“They should volunteer at Sarah's Inn because it's one of the few organizations that are helping to break the cycles of domestic violence by reaching the root of the situation. Not only do they support the victims to get justice and help them in any way possible such as with shelter, financial help, or therapy but it also helps the perpetrators to receive counseling to break their cycles, to understand that hurting others is not the solution to their possible traumas. But overall, the whole team at Sarah’s Inn is welcoming and supportive to each other and the clients, which makes volunteering easy to be a part of your daily schedule.”
